What is Silicon Metal?

Silicon metal is a grey and lustrous semi-conductive metal that is used to manufacture steel, solar cells, and microchips. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earth's crust (behind only oxygen) and the eighth-most common element in the universe. Nearly 30 percent of the weight of the earth's crust can be attributed to silicon. The element with atomic number 14 naturally occurs in silicate minerals, including silica, feldspar, and mica, which are major components of common rocks such as quartz and sandstone. A semi-metal (or metalloid), silicon possesses some properties of both metals and non-metals.

How Silicon Metal Is Produced?

Silicon metalloid, also referred to as a semi-metal or metal (although it isn't one strictly speaking), is best known for its semiconductor characteristics and has been vital in the development of solar energy and electronics, driving digital technology. A semiconductor does not conduct electricity very well in its pure form but, by adding impurities, as is the case in silicon metalloids, it is possible to influence and control electron transport conductivity.

Silicon in its elemental form is not found in nature. It is present together with oxygen and other elements in various minerals. Silicon is typically produced from quartz or quartzite (SiO2), with low content of impurities. Unlike what many sources claim, silicon cannot be produced from fine, powder-like sand. The quartz used in the process is typically sized to 5–100 mm. To produce silicon, oxygen is combined with carbon to produce CO in a complex process with several reaction steps occurring at the same time in an electric arc furnace. The CO gas can be collected or reacted to CO2 when exposed to air.

Due to the high amount of gas produced in the process (CO and SiO), it is important to have a porous furnace charge that can ensure even distribution of the SiO gas in order to maximize the silicon yield. Therefore, it is a common practice to add significant amounts of wood chips to the furnace. This is also the reason why quartz sand cannot be used since it will clog the furnace. The SiO gas that is not captured in the furnace will escape and oxidize by air to silica fume (microsilica). The carbon used in the process can be sourced from biogenic sources, but all types of carbon sources can in principle be used. The process is also very energy-intensive, typically requiring about 10–14 MWh of electrical power to produce one metric tonne of silicon.

Molten silicon is refined in a ladle to control the elements that are less noble than silicon (Al, Ca, etc.) and then cast into suitable molds. The elements that are more noble than silicon like for instance iron must be controlled with the composition of the raw materials. The solidified silicon is then crushed/milled to the required particle size.

How Brittle Is Silicon Metal?

As most kinds advanced ceramics, SiC also possesses extreme hardness and brittleness that cannot endure excessive power of knocking. Improper cutting force can generate sub-surface damage and micro-crack in the structure, causing scatter and uneven machined surface.

The cutting scraps removal is also an essential part for SiC precision machining, the hard scraps might damage the materials or accumulate inside the micro holes.

Ultimate FAQ Guide to Silicon Metal

Q: Is silicon metal commonly used in various industrial applications?

A: Silicon metal is a high-grade silicon metal alloy that is commonly used in a variety of industrial applications. It is a product of the refining process that converts raw materials such as silica, coke, and wood chips into pure silicon metal. Silicon metal 553 is known for its unique properties and advantages, which make it a preferred choice for many industries.

Q: Is the advantage of silicon metal due to its high silicon content?

A: One of the biggest advantages of silicon metal is its high silicon content. It typically has a silicon content of above 99%, which is higher than that of silicon metal 553 and 441. This high silicon content makes it suitable for use in applications where high-purity silicon is required, such as in the production of electronic devices, solar panels, and other high-tech products.

Q: Does silicon metal have low impurity content?

A: Another advantage of silicon metal is its low levels of impurities. It contains very low levels of elements such as iron, aluminum, and calcium, which can negatively impact the performance of silicon in certain applications. This makes it a preferred choice for applications where high levels of purity and low levels of impurities are critical.

Q: Is silicon metal necessary for the manufacturing industry?

A: Silicon Metal (SiMe) is essential to producing polydimethylsiloxane, commonly known as silicone rubber. There is no substitute. Silicon metal refining facilities in China provide roughly 70% of the global output. Most of us in the silicone rubber industry considered it plentiful. However, in September 2021, sudden energy brownouts in China severely affected refining capacity, creating supply bottlenecks.

Q: Are silicon metal's costs rising?

A: Silicon metal costs jumped by 300%. Although silicon metal production has been full throttle in recent months and costs are now down, the effects on much of the silicone rubber supply chain remains. Major silicone foam, silicone sponge and solid silicone sheet producers have had challenges catching up with demand due to the lack of silicone rubber raw materials.

Q: What Is Silicon Metal Used For?

A: High-purity silicon metal is used by many industries. In the chemical industry it is used for producing silicon compounds as well as silicon wafers used in photovoltaic solar cells and electronic semiconductors. And aluminum manufacturers use it to improve the already useful properties of aluminum. When used with aluminum, silicon improves its castability, hardness and strength.

Q: How is silicon metal produced?

A: The inputs to refining or smelting silicon metal are quartz sand and coke (carbon). The high temperature refining (silicon has a melting point of 2570°F) process is energy intensive – requiring approximately 13,000 kilowatt-hours per ton of silicon metal produced. The major producers have direct access to quartz mines and low cost energy.

Q: What are some of the uses of silicon metal?

A: 25 to 30% of silicon metal output is required to make polycrystalline silicon for the semiconductor and solar industry.
45 to 55% of silicon metal is refined for metallurgical grade silicon used to make aluminum alloys – lightweight and strong metal alloy for the automotive and transportation sectors.
Only 25 to 30% of silicon metal is further refined through a hydro-metallurgical process to make chemical-grade silicon metal for silicone rubber and silanes.

Q: Why Choose Silicon Metal?

A: Silicon metal, a material with high melting point properties, is commonly used in high temperature processes and electronics manufacturing. The high melting point of silicon metal makes it the material of choice for many industrial and electronic applications. Its excellent performance and stability in high-temperature processes and electronics manufacturing provide solid support for modern industrial development and technological advances. Silicon metal will continue to play an important role, whether in aerospace, energy development or electronic equipment manufacturing.

Q: Is silicon metal stable in high temperature environments?

A: Silicon metal exhibits extremely high stability in high temperature environments. Its ability to withstand oxidation, corrosion and mechanical stress at high temperatures has led to its widespread use in high-temperature processes such as steelmaking, casting and high-temperature alloy preparation. Its excellent heat resistance makes silicon metal an important component of many critical industrial equipment.

Q: Is silicon metal important in electronics manufacturing applications?

A: Silicon metal also has important applications in electronics manufacturing. Due to its high melting point and excellent electrical conductivity, silicon metal is often used as the basis for semiconductor materials. The silicon wafers it prepares can be used in areas such as integrated circuits and solar cells, providing a solid foundation for the development of modern technology.

Q: What are the advantages of silicon metal?

A: Silicon metal has good mechanical strength and chemical stability, and can withstand a variety of environmental and process conditions. At the same time, silicon metal also has a low coefficient of thermal expansion, which makes it less susceptible to thermal stresses during temperature changes, thus improving the service life and reliability of the material.
